Music for organ and voice

Co-Composed with Robyn Jacob

Thinking from the pipe organ’s history of imitating the human voice, this concert-length work crafts a sonic language to encircle the organ and voice together in varying ways. Referred to as ‘Vox Humana’, this example of imitation in organ design, where sounds outside the instrument appear reformed as various types of pipes, demonstrates a foundational relation between the organ and its surrounding soundscape. How could this relation be re-imagined in the context of our current soundscape? Incorporating computer control and feedback processes between the voice and the organ, a digital poetics is explored which reimagines the relationship between organ and choral music in the context of an increasingly digitally-mediated world.
